Practicing Utopia: Feminism and Activism in Institutional Contexts

Please join us for this spring’s IRWGS graduate-organized conference, “Practicing Utopia: Feminism and Activism in Institutional Contexts,” to be held on Friday, February 26th, 9am-5:15pm in Butler Library, Room 523, with reception to follow from 5:15-6. You can RSVP on facebook.
This year’s conference focuses on the tension between utopian ideals and the practical realities of making change within or in opposition to the various institutions that shape our lives. The keynote will be given by Heather McGhee (president of the public policy center Demos), and panelists include Jennifer Boylan (author of She’s Not There: A Life in Two Genders), Lindsey Dayton (Labor Activist; Columbia PhD student, History), Andrea Dixon (The Columbia Center for Justice; PhD candidate, Communications), Maida Rosenstein (President of UAW Local 2110), Rachel Levy (Bluestockings Bookstore; founder of Hoax feminist zine), Megan E. Reid (Editorial Assistant, Simon & Schuster),  Karen D. Taylor (While We Are Still Here: Preserving Harlem’s History) and IRWGS faculty Ellie Hisama (Columbia Music Department), Jean Howard (Columbia Department of English and Comparative Literature).
